Electronic drums is a modern electronic musical instrument, primarily designed to serve as an alternative to an acoustic drum kit. It consists of an electronic sound module which produces the synthesized or sampled percussion sounds and a set of ‘pads’, usually constructed in a shape to resemble drums and cymbals, which are equipped with electronic sensors (or triggers) to send an electronic signal to the sound module which outputs a sound to the player.

Like regular drums, the pads are struck by drum sticks and they are played in a similar manner to an acoustic drum kit, albeit some differences in the drumming experience.
Electronic drum kits employ rubber/silicone pads or breathable mesh drumheads to dramatically reduce the level of ambient noise, making them a great option for making music at home, as well as for playing out on quiet stages and worship platforms. This is not to say that electronic drums don’t produce any sound.

Decent electronic drum kits have a headphone jack – and can be further piped-down by drum sound isolation boards and noise-reducing pedals – which makes them an ideal choice for beginners practicing in shared accommodation.

Do professional drummers use electronic drums?

Most drummers are looking for the best of both of these worlds, and that is where hybrid drums come in. Hybrid drums are the perfect combination of acoustic and electronic drums. Drummers can include electronic elements with their current acoustic drum kit by including triggers, drum pads, and drum modules.
