This is a handy wireless mic system for anyone on a budget. I normally use a shotgun mic positioned just out of frame, but there have been a few instances where I wanted to record in another room or move around. Problem with that is any movement would require me to stop and adjust the microphone and make sure I am only talking when facing it.
I have used a wired lapel in the past, but then I was limited by cable length and anytime I tried to extend the cable I would get interference on the line and make that whole clip utterly useless.
So enter the Fifine Wireless Lav Microphone. First thing is that it is in my price range. I can’t go out and buy a $500 system at this time in my career. The second thing it offers is mobility. I can move around an area and still get the same audio quality and that is a HUGE plus. It also saves time. If I change location, I don’t have to adjust the mic. It’s on me, I’m not tethered to a cable, and it’s always at the perfect angle after initial setup.
The only other concern you should have here is the audio quality. For a roughly $30 wireless mic, it is surprisingly good. I noticed very little noise out of the box. I took some time to find the clearest frequency it offered and then paired that with a pre-amp. Doing that, I was able to reduce the noise to almost nothing. I haven’t had any need to try to stretch it to its full range, but at about 25 feet away I was still getting crystal clear audio. It also features a built in antennae that can be extended out of the receiver to improve clarity and connection. I like this because when you are closer, you can just tuck it away. No screwing or unscrewing of an antennae needed.
The build quality doesn’t feel cheap in the hand either. The fact that multiple units can be used really adds to its value. It makes it great for interviews or small groups. My only gripe would be that it does require an adapter to work on my DSLR, but the adapter is about 4 or 5 bucks so my complaint is minimal.
All in all, it is a handy solution to any filmmaker, interviewer, or content creator on a budget.
