Piano – Grand, Upright and Digital

The piano is an acoustic, stringed musical instrument invented in Italy around the year 1700. Pianos are designed in such a way that the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material and is played using a keyboard, which is a row of keys (small levers) that the performer presses down or strikes with the fingers and thumbs of both hands to cause the hammers to strike the strings.

Although the pianos can be classified as a string instrument due to the fact that the sounds come from the vibration of strings, it can also be classified as a percussion instrument because a hammer strikes those strings.

• Digital Piano

A grand is a large piano whose strings are set horizontally to the ground. Grand pianos are used especially for giving concerts and making recordings.

In an upright piano, the strings are strung vertically to make the instrument more compact, which allows the piano to be played in a limited space. In contrast, the grand retains the shape of the original pianoforte in which the strings are strung horizontally, and has a greater potential for expression.

A digital piano is a type of electronic keyboard instrument designed to serve primarily as an alternative to the traditional acoustic, both in the way it feels to play and in the sound produced.

With the pace of time the musical industry has evolved along with the Musical instruments. Though one may not get the feel of grand in digital or upright piano, it has become the most common because of it’s size and portability.
